Latest Bulletin from Public Health France: Increase in Acute Respiratory Infections – Flu, Bronchiolitis, and Covid-19 Indicators

In the week of November 6 to 12, indicators of acute respiratory infections (flu, bronchiolitis and Covid-19) increased slightly in community medicine and remained stable in hospitals, indicates the latest bulletin from Public Health France. This increase in the city concerns flu-like illnesses, despite stable circulation of flu viruses.

Concerning bronchiolitis, its level is stable in children under two years old. To note “a marked increase in the positivity rate for RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) in community medicine”, specifies Public Health France. Covid-19 indicators also remain stable.

Bronchiolitis

According to the last Sentinel survey, carried out in collaboration with Public Health France, the incidence rate of cases of bronchiolitis is 26 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in general medicine consultations. An increasing rate compared to the previous week which concerns all age groups. Among the 6,939 SOS Médecins medical procedures carried out for children under 2 years old, 510 procedures (7.3%) were linked to bronchiolitis.

In hospital, 3,439 visits to the emergency room for bronchiolitis were recorded, or 15.8% of visits in this age group (compared to 15.9% the previous week). The number of hospitalizations following going to the emergency room for bronchiolitis was 1,170, or 31.8% of hospitalizations in this age group (compared to 33.1% the previous week).

Covid-19

The incidence rate of Covid-19 cases in general practice is up compared to the previous week with 58 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In total, 2,299 SOS Médecins procedures for suspected COVID-19 were recorded. They increased slightly among those aged 5-64 and were stable in the other age groups.

On the other hand, hospitalizations following going to the emergency room for Covid or suspected Covid decreased among those aged 65 and over and remained stable in other age groups. Among all hospitalizations following going to the emergency room, 1,120 (1.7%) were hospitalized for Covid or suspected Covid (vs. 1.9% in W44).

Influenza

The incidence rate of cases of influenza in general medicine consultations is 3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a stable rate compared to the previous week. Note a slight increase in consultations at SOS Médecins for the second consecutive week, mainly among 5-14 year olds and 15-64 year olds.

The number of visits to the emergency room for influenza-like illness is stable. It was 663, or 0.2% of passages. The number of hospitalizations following a flu-related illness was 62, or 0.1% of all hospitalizations.
