John oliver: Thanks for having me! It’s great to be back. The timing feels perfect, doesn’t it? The news cycle is indeed moving faster than a cheetah on – well, you know. It’s an exciting time to be in the political satire game, that’s without a doubt. We’ve always tried to stay ahead of the curve, but these days, it feels like we’re surfing a wave!

Speaking of staying ahead, your last episode tackled the contentious topic of the TikTok ban. How do you and your team manage to cover such a wide range of issues while keeping the show funny and informative?

John Oliver: Well, our team is incredibly dedicated. We have researchers who dig deep into topics and make sure we’re absolutely sure of our facts before we go to air. As for the humor, I think it comes from a place of passion and a bit of disbelief. Sometimes, the things happening in the world are so absurd that you can’t help but laugh. Our job is to hold a mirror up and reflect that absurdity back at the audience,with a healthy dose of wit and sarcasm.

“Last Week Tonight” has been known to tackle subjects that often go under the radar, like libraries or even the mundane allure of Red Lobster. Why do you choose to take on such a diverse range of topics?

John Oliver: Because if we only focused on the big, obvious news stories, we’d be just like every other show out there. We want to surprise people, to make them laugh, but also to make them think.Sometimes, the most important stories are hiding in plain sight. And sometimes, they’re just realy specific and weird, like Red Lobster’s endless shrimp promotion.But hey, we’ll take laughs wherever we can get them!

The show received a three-season renewal. That’s a real vote of confidence from HBO. What keeps you motivated after all these years?

John Oliver: The audience,frist and foremost. Knowing that people are watching, laughing, and maybe even learning something new keeps us going. But also, every week, there’s just so much material to work with. You could fill a library – a very clever, very funny library – with all the jokes we haven’t even written yet. And that’s exciting!

You once said that political satire is not only essential but also undeniably funny. Can you elaborate on that?

John Oliver: Sure. I think political satire serves multiple purposes. On one hand, it’s a way of holding power to account. We can laugh at the absurdity of it all, but that laughter is also a form of protest. It’s saying, “We see you. We’re not going to let you get away with bullshit.” But on the other hand, laughter is a coping mechanism. It helps us process the sheer weirdness of the world. And at the end of the day, that’s what makes it undeniably funny. The world is absurd, so we might as well laugh about it.

John, what can fans expect from the season 12 premiere?

John oliver: I can’t give too much away, but I will say this: we’re kicking things off with a bang. We’ve got a big story that we’ve been dying to tackle, some incredible segments that our team has been working tirelessly on, and – of course – plenty of laughs.
