Last Minute Rumors: Apple Headset Will Cost $2,000 and Will Have “X1” Chip

2023-06-05 15:26:28

A Apple is just a few hours away from holding the opening keynote of the WWDC23, which should include product launches along with announcements of the company’s new operating systems. Of all the novelties, the most anticipated is, without a doubt, the mixed reality headset of the company.

Practically at 45 minutes of the second half, a new leaker post identified as yeux1122, known for releasing “leaks” from other sources, shows an image that looks like a screenshot of the Apple website showing the headset; in it, the device name is seen as “Apple XR” and suggests a starting price of US$2 mil — down from the widely speculated $3,000 — which would mean there may be more expensive options to choose from.

The image also includes alleged details regarding the headset, such as the use of the dual “X1” chip, a “12-camera system”, “stunning XDR 8K optics”, and the “xrOS” operating system.

Developer and journalist Benjamin Mayo, however, made an alert regarding the imagepointing out that her creator used (modified) renderings of 9to5Mac without credit. In addition, there are some inconsistencies and doubts that reduce the credibility of the rumor, starting with the fact that it tries to impersonate an Apple page.

More supposed specs

Still in terms of possible specifications of the headset, the leaker Unknownz21 (@URedditor) brought a list of other alleged characteristics of the device — some of them already speculated and others unpublished. Are they:

Some last minute information regarding the headset’s hardware:
⁃ Button on the left, Digital Crown on the right,
⁃ Two displays, µOLED [Micro-OLED]
⁃ 1 TrueDepth camera, probably for Face ID
⁃ IPD [distância interpupilar]semi-automatic adjustment
⁃ 4 CV cameras [conversão de cores]
⁃ 2 RGB cameras [vermelho, verde e azul]
⁃ 2 low-light infrared illuminators
.
⁃ 2 SOCs [sistemas em um chip] — main processor and coprocessor, SEP [separado]
⁃ small battery, wired battery
⁃ 1 conector USB-C
⁃ Sensors: Compass, ALS [sensor de luz ambiente]magnetometer, ambient light sensor, accelerometer and gyroscope
⁃ Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, ULLA
⁃ built-in stereo speakers
⁃ 4 microphones

Unlike the source cited at the beginning of this article, this leaker has a better known (and positive) track record, so we can expect at least some correct information from this list — but there’s always the possibility that nothing is correct, of course.

Start of sales

Who also took advantage of the big day was the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who published an update of his prediction regarding the start of sales of the headset.

According to him, mass sales of the device are expected to begin at the end of the fourth quarter of this year or in early 2024 – compared to the previous forecast that this would begin in the third quarter of 2023.

He also pointed out that sales in 2023 are likely to be lower than market consensus. However, the focus of investors now is not on sales, but on whether the announcement “will convince people that Apple’s headset is the next star in consumer electronics”.
