1. FC Köln and Fortuna Düsseldorf drew in the Rhineland derby on the sixth matchday of the 2. Bundesliga thanks to a last-minute goal from Jona Niemiec. Eintracht Braunschweig defeated Greuther Fürth, Hertha celebrated an away win in Nuremberg.

Niemiec (90th+5) saved the league leaders from their first defeat of the season and secured the late 2:2 (1:1). Cologne had taken the lead twice through Eric Martel (21st minute) and Linton Maina (61st). But Niemiec and Emmanuel Iyoha (25th) ultimately ensured the hosts a flattering point in only the fifth derby between the two clubs in the lower house.

Cologne had good chances early on, with Luca Waldschmidt (10th), Maina (17th) and Tim Lemperle (20th) all thwarted by Fortuna’s Florian Kastenmeier. Martel scored with a header after a poorly defended cross. But the lead didn’t last long. Four minutes after the 0-1, Iyoha made it 1-1 and Dawid Kownacki (27th) almost turned the game around completely. But his shot flew just over the goal. After that, however, it mostly went the other way.

Cologne pushed for the second goal, had more possession and numerous good chances through Waldschmidt, Damion Downs and Steffen Tigges. Sometimes every minute, before Maina managed to regain the lead with a shot into the far corner. In a hectic final phase, however, Düsseldorf reared up again and were able to celebrate the equalizer thanks to Niemiec, whose shot on goal was actually supposed to be a cross.

Hertha BSC gives 1. FC Nuremberg their third defeat of the season

On his return to Nuremberg, Cristian Fiél celebrated a prestigious victory with Hertha BSC in the coaching duel with his prominent successor Miroslav Klose. The 44-year-old was very satisfied with his team’s performance in the 2-0 (1-0) win at the Max-Morlock Stadium – quite the opposite of Klose. The 2014 world champion suffered his third defeat of the season with the club on matchday 6.

Derry Scherhant (37th minute) and substitute Palkó Dárdai (90th) scored for the Berliners, who, after their third win of the season, moved ten points clear of FCN, who had previously been level on points.

Eintracht Braunschweig celebrates first three points thanks to Philippe’s brace

Meanwhile, Eintracht Braunschweig celebrated its first win of the season. Without the suspended coach Daniel Scherning on the sidelines, the Lower Saxony team defeated SpVgg Greuther Fürth 2-0 (1-0). The strong Rayan Philippe (33rd and 60th minutes) scored both goals for the hosts.

Scherning, who watched the game from a box in the stands at the Eintracht stadium, saw that his players quickly created more chances under the direction of assistant coach Marc Pfitzner. However, they were initially lacking in effectiveness. Fürth failed to make its own mark throughout the game and deservedly suffered its first defeat of the season.
