Switching off the lighting also has a positive environmental impact, namely a saving of around 330 MWh per year, or 72 tonnes of CO2 avoided.
During the budgetary modification in October, the Municipality recorded non-use of €230,000 for the budgetary credit relating to public lighting. This is explained by the cut-off of public lighting at night but also by the cost of kWh which decreased in 2023 compared to 2022.
”In addition, a non-use of €124,000 was recorded for the electricity of our administrative, sports and school buildings. As for public lighting, part is to be attributed to market prices, and the other part to the drop in consumption,” indicates the Municipality in a press release.
Replacing public lighting with LED lights also has a positive impact on municipal finances. “Lasne continues to invest every year, via ORES, in this transition. The objective is for the network to be entirely composed of LEDs by 2030. This change has already made it possible to reduce energy consumption by 27% on the public lighting network since 2020.”
According to the Municipality, turning off public lighting at night has no impact on accidents and burglaries. The municipalities grouped within the Mazerine police zone (Lasne, Rixensart, La Hulpe) requested a report from the police forces: “The conclusions of this report are reassuring: since the measure came into force, the number of accidents and burglaries has fallen slightly”.
