LINZ. The situation at LASK is coming to a head. The Linz team lost 1:5 (0:2) to WAC in the 5th round of the Bundesliga on Sunday.

With their fourth league defeat in a row, Thomas Darazs’ team, which had already been winless in six competitive matches, went into the international break in second-to-last place. Dietmar Kühbauer celebrated the third win of the season for his now third-placed WAC at his old stomping ground.

Goals from Simon Piesinger (14th), David Atanga (30th) and Maximilian Ullmann (48th, 84th), an own goal from Rene Renner (50th) and a penalty from Marin Ljubicic (93rd) meant LASK’s heaviest home league defeat since the 0:4 against Rapid on December 1, 2019. Kühbauer was also in charge of the opponents then. The Burgenlander has now won eight of his ten most recent duels with the Upper Austrians. In front of 10,200 spectators, the seemingly aimless athletes conceded more than three goals for the first time in the new stadium. LASK had to play with ten men from the 39th minute after a frustration foul by Sascha Horvath.

Darazs had previously put his team in front of him, who had missed out on a place in the Europa League during the week. In his search for a breakthrough, he relied on experience; from the goalie to the defensive midfielder, all of the starting eleven players were already over 30. Renner played his first minutes for the first team this calendar year after his knee injury. Jerome Boateng made it into the starting eleven for the first time after his much-publicized move to LASK. The German ex-world champion was relieved by being substituted in the 56th minute.

WAC offensive with pressure right from the start

The WAC offensive, with the well-positioned Atanga, Angelo Gattermayer and Dejan Zukic, posed serious problems for the newly formed Linz defense right from the start. A spectacular long-range shot from Piesinger brought the already deserved lead, but the post prevented the 2-0 shortly afterwards. Gattermayer danced around Boateng and Siebenhandl deflected the shot onto the post (21′). The former Bayern star Boateng not only appeared stiff in this action, but he also had one of LASK’s few scoring opportunities with a header after a corner in the 7th minute.

Restart

The referee team judged a handball by Ullmann in the WAC penalty area not to be penalized, as the former Linz player shot the ball into his own arm (27′). A short time later, the score was 2-0. Thierno Ballo set up Zukic, the Carinthian star signing of the summer, who had complete freedom with his pinpoint cross into the path of Atanga. Unchallenged, Atanga put the ball over the line for his first goal since returning to Austria.

Horvath sah Rot

As if further proof of Linz’s current situation was needed, Horvath was provoked into a rough kick against Ervin Omic’s leg in the 39th minute. Without complaining, the creative player slunk into the dressing room after his expulsion. Omic was lucky enough to continue playing and almost saw the score 3-0 (47th minute/Zukic miss) before the break. It was heralded – not surprisingly – by shrill whistles from the stands.

The guests scored their third goal quickly after the break. Gattermayer was alone on the right flank after an opening pass and served Ullmann in the backcourt (48th minute). Two minutes later, after a Ljubicic shot, there was general chaos in the Linz penalty area – Renner ultimately scored an own goal. The home team then recorded one or two partial offensive successes against a WAC in administration mode.

But the damage was already irreparable. The young Erik Kojzek, who recently scored twice against GAK, had the chance to make it 5-0. Ullmann did better with a well-considered shot from just outside the penalty area (84′). Ljubicic scored the consolation goal after a rather flattering penalty call in injury time (93′).
