Las Vegas is rapidly establishing itself as a leading global hub for international rugby, drawing an enthusiastic fanbase and elite teams from around the world. With its lineup of major sporting events, record-setting audience attendance, and the formation of strategic partnerships on a global scale, the city is poised to elevate rugby’s visibility and significance in the United States like never before.
Las Vegas was previously celebrated primarily for hosting the World Rugby Sevens Series, which took place annually at the iconic Sam Boyd Stadium from 2010 until 2020. This year, however, the city achieved a historic milestone by hosting its first-ever National Rugby League (NRL) match outside Australia, further expanding its rugby portfolio.
In 2025, Las Vegas is again set to shine as a key location for high-stakes rugby league action. On March 1st, the city will stage two exciting NRL matches: the Canberra Raiders will take on the New Zealand Warriors and the Penrith Panthers will clash with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Additionally, fans can anticipate an exhilarating Super League showdown featuring the Wigan Warriors against the Warrington Wolves. Exciting times await rugby enthusiasts, as they can also mark their calendars for a women’s Ashes Test match between the celebrated Australian Jillaroos and their fierce rivals, the England Lionesses. This encounter marks the long-awaited return of the Ashes series, which has not been seen since 2003—paying homage to the storied rivalry between the UK and Australia in cricket.
Looking to the future, the British & Irish Lions are giving serious consideration to including a stop in Las Vegas during their highly anticipated 2029 tour en route to New Zealand, where they will face off against the legendary All Blacks. Although their rivals in Las Vegas have yet to be determined, contenders include the United States national team, the Maori All Blacks, or Japan, adding an air of intrigue to the tour itinerary. Other major U.S. cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, are also being eyed as possible destinations on this illustrious tour. Before embarking on this remarkable journey, however, the British & Irish Lions will first take to the pitch next year to face Argentina in a home fixture in Dublin, before making their way to Australia.
As rugby continues its upward trajectory in popularity, the United States is set to host the prestigious 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup and the 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cup, solidifying America’s position as one of the fastest-growing rugby nations. The country proudly boasts the third-largest population of rugby players globally, reflecting a vibrant and expanding interest in the sport. Las Vegas is likely to play a pivotal role in hosting portions of these international championship tournaments. While the World Rugby Sevens Series currently stages its U.S. tournament in Carson, California, Las Vegas is steadfastly working to enhance its reputation as a premier destination for rugby aficionados.
