It’s a surprisingly abrupt end: the Belgian Larian Studios will not develop any new content for “Baldur’s Gate 3”. Studio boss Swen Vincke announced this at the GDC developer fair. The role-playing experts don’t want to develop a “Baldur’s Gate 4” either, said Vincke. The decision comes as a surprise given the great success of “BG3”.

Many fans speculate that there may have been a disagreement between Larian and Hasbro, whose subsidiary Wizards of the Coast markets the “Dungeons and Dragons” rights. This is also because Vincke loudly railed once morest big game companies at GDC: “I’ve been fighting with publishers my whole life and I keep seeing the same mistakes,” said Vincke at an awards ceremony at the GDC. “It’s always regarding the quarterly profits. The only thing that matters are the numbers.” Vincke particularly criticized the job cuts that are currently rampant in the games industry. Hasbro also laid off Wizards of the Coast employees at the end of 2023. However, Vincke denied that there might have been a dispute between Wizards of the Coast and Larian. Wizards of the Coast is a “great licensor,” writes Vincke on Platform X.
“DnD Restrictions”
Compared to the Games magazine IGN Vincke said that work on a DLC for “Baldur’s Gate 3” had already begun before the studio decided otherwise. The planned DLCs were therefore canceled. It would have been obvious to develop a DLC and later even “Baldur’s Gate 4,” said Vincke. Finally, they decided to do something new once more. “There are a lot of limitations when developing DnD, and 5th Edition is not an easy system for a video game. We had all these ideas for new combat that we wanted to try, and they weren’t compatible.”
Exactly what happens next for Larian remains unclear. Vincke told IGN that the studio’s next game will not be “Divinity Original Sin 3,” Larian’s own brand of role-playing games. This means that the studio will probably come up with a new universe.
The development of “Baldur’s Gate 3” is not yet completely finished. Larian wants to continue developing patches and improving modding support. However, Vincke clearly rejected new content. A revised “Definitive Edition”, as Larian has published in the past for its “Original Sin” games, is also off the table.
