In 1999, an employee of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments accidentally discovered suspicious soil discoloration on the grounds of the Manching oppidum. The large Celtic city-like settlement probably existed between the third and first centuries BC near present-day Ingolstadt. The spot in the ground turned out to be a huge hoard of gold: the 3.7 kilogram hoard consisted of 483 gold coins and a 217 gram nugget of gold – together this find from around 100 BC represented the largest Celtic gold find of the 20th century.
