Emergency doctors and police officers arrived. The cause was a “hot chip challenge” by fifth graders, the police said. The spicy corn tortilla chips were only released for those over 18, but were stolen from a nearby snack stand by two schoolchildren, aged nine and eleven.
“These chips appear to be very, very heavily flavored and extremely hot,” the school board warned on its website after the incident. The treating emergency doctor said that consumption could be very dangerous, especially for children. If the powder from the chips gets into your eyes, they could be damaged. Fortunately, nothing bad happened in this case. Most of the children escaped with a fright. A few would have needed treatment for stomach pains. According to the police, skin and respiratory irritation were also treated first.
