Large Richter show in the Zwirner gallery in New York

A few months following the Zwirner gallery in New York took over as Gerhard Richter’s representative, an exhibition of the artist’s works can be seen there for the first time. Several dozen paintings, works on paper and a glass sculpture by the 91-year-old are said to be on display until April 22, the gallery founded by David Zwirner said. She had taken over from Richter in December.

The opening of the first Richter show was an “incredibly proud moment” for the gallery, said Zwirner during a tour of the exhibition. An exhibition with works by Richter was last seen in New York in 2020 – but this show at the Met Breuer Museum had to close once more following just a few days due to the corona pandemic.

Richter, who lives and works in Cologne, is counted among the most important and successful contemporary artists. “I’ve known David since he was a child and worked closely with his father, Rudolf Zwirner, back in the 1960s,” Richter was quoted as saying when it was announced that David Zwirner would take over his representation. “It feels like a wonderful continuity across generations to me.” Prior to that Richter was with the Marian Goodman gallery for almost 40 years.

Rudolf Zwirner was a gallery owner in Cologne. In addition to several galleries in New York, his son David also has branches in London and Hong Kong.
