As herds head up for the risky summering season in the face of the return of the wolf, the state presents its series of aids to shepherds. Too late, they say.

The announcement was expected. Much awaited even, on the part of the shepherds who join, between last weekend and the one to come, their mountain pastures, fear in their stomachs. After the shooting of two wolves last March, tension remains high in the Vaudois Jura, where one of the two packs had multiplied unprecedented attacks on cattle last season.
Instead of a detailed device, it is however an “à la carte” plan of measures and still being developed, that the Council of State validated Wednesday morning to aim for a better cohabitation between the predator and the alpine economy. The idea? “Come in addition” to the aid of the Confederation, according to the requests of the operators and the shepherds. The Federal Office for the Environment had already announced temporary measures a week ago for the summer season and the 15 known wolf packs in the country. A reinforcement which essentially includes the reimbursement of cantonal measures at 80% and the increase of certain amounts on patou dogs or fencing equipment.
