In the midst of drought in Cuba, large forest fires are taking center stage these days. The most recent occurred this Sunday night in the city of Santa Clara, and following appearing to be under control, it was reactivated once more this Monday morning.
The incident occurred in the wooded area that extends from the Los Caneyes Hotel to the tourism school (Formatur), reported the local newspaper Vanguardia. At the stroke of midnight the fire was brought under control, leaving no loss of life.
The joint action of firefighters and the ranger corps allowed the flames to not spread once more through the affected area.
According to information from the provincial government of Villa Clara on the social network Facebook, there is only one inhabited home in that damaged area. No one who lived there was harmed by the fire.
However, in the morning hours of this Monday, a resurgence of the fire was reported, which is now being controlled, according to what radio station CMHW is publishing right now.
Preventive electricity cut
The city’s Electric Company decided to cut the service as soon as the fire was reported, as a preventive measure. Almost at midnight, when the flames were controlled, power was restored to the nearby circuits affected by the incident.
The corresponding authorities are still investigating the causes of what happened on Sunday night in said forested area of Santa Clara.
The drought season in Cuba extends from January to May, hence the high risk faced, above all, by the country’s forests. By the way, last year more than 600 fires were reported on the Island.
By the way, one of them affected several areas of the Pinares de Mayarí plateau and the east, west and south slopes of the Sierra de Nipe, in Holguín, for almost a month. The incident damaged 14 thousand hectares of forests.
The authorities of the Cuban Forest Ranger Corps themselves agreed that negligence constituted 96% of the causes of the forest fires reported during 2023.
