To mark Barbie’s 65th birthday, the Design Museum in London is honoring the history of the world-famous doll with a new exhibition. The museum announced on Tuesday that it had gained access to the Barbie archives in California thanks to a partnership with the toy company Mattel. From July 5, 2024, rare and unique pieces will tell the story of the brand.
The show had been planned for several years. In the summer, a Hollywood film regarding Barbie with Margot Robbie in the title role and Ryan Gosling as Ken sparked hype regarding the character. Barbie came onto the market in 1959. The exhibition, which will be on view until February 2025, will look back at the beginnings as well as include the figure’s influence on fashion, architecture, furniture and vehicle design, it said in London. “Barbie is one of the most recognizable brands in the world, and as we have recently seen, her story continues to evolve with each new generation,” said Design Museum boss Tim Marlow.
