The work on the collapsed gas pipeline in Eindhoven will continue today to prevent further problems. A large crane will have to hold the defective water pump in place for the next few days.
The crane – of which there are only a few in the Netherlands – was driven yesterday from Nederweert in Limburg to Eindhoven under police escort.
To keep the crane balanced, three trucks with ballast were driven along. A total of 155,000 kilos of ballast was placed on the crane on site, so that it remains balanced, the owner of the crane tells L1.
This is to prevent the pipe from being further damaged by the pump, a fire brigade spokesperson explains Broadcasting Brabant.
Yesterday’s problems with the gas line were probably caused by a defect in that pump. This released an enormous amount of water, which would have washed away sand around the gas pipeline. Because part of the pipe was no longer supported, the pipe might have burst.
Impeachment
As a precaution, an area of 200 meters around the pipeline was cordoned off. The adjacent highways were also closed in both directions, a combined stretch of the A2 and A67. This also applied to the N2. Traffic in and around Eindhoven suffered from traffic jams for a large part of the day.
The roads have been open once more since 8:30 PM last night. Only part of Professor Holstlaan in Eindhoven remains closed.
