Laptop sales have plummeted worldwide. What is the reason

The second quarter of 2022 was marked by a nearly 19% drop in laptop sales globally. All major brands have been affected – for example, shipments of HP laptops have fallen by 35%. Acer has this figure at 21%. Experts blame global inflation for everything, but it might also be the departure of major brands from Russia.

Laptops are losing demand

The world recorded a colossal drop in sales of laptops. The analytical company Canalys claims that in the second quarter of 2022 it amounted to 18.6% year-on-year. Data for Q3 2022 was not available at the time of publication due to the fact that it ended less than a week ago.

According to information Canalyssales laptops falling for three quarters in a row. In the second quarter of 2022, vendors shipped only 54.5 million mobile PCs globally. Forecasts for the III and IV quarters of 2022 are not yet announced by Canalys experts, but given what exactly they justify the drop in sales in the period from April 1 to June 30, 2022, these forecasts are hardly rosy.

Who is guilty

Canalys decided not to state directly who caused the current situation in the global notebook market. They clarified only that this problem is of a global nature.

Consumers no longer see the need to buy a new laptop if their current one can do all the basic tasks.

In this case, we are talking regarding an increase in inflation that hit the global economy exactly in the second quarter of 2022. However, its prerequisites appeared in the middle of the first quarter of 2022, around the 20th of February.

The rise in inflation is followed relentlessly by the rise in prices for all goods, and equipment in this case was no exception. Unwilling to buy computers and others gadgets at inflated prices, users preferred to use the devices they had, which brought down the demand for laptops, moreover, for the most part, in consumer segment.

China has not yet been defeated

Considering the situation in the global notebook market, Canalys analysts stressed that all major manufacturers faced a drop in supplies. Under the distribution were both Chinese and American vendorsas well as companies from Taiwan.

Chinese Lenovo, which started its PC business by buying it from the American IBM 18 years ago, now holds the top spot in notebook shipments. In Q2 2022, it accounted for 24% of shipped mobile PCs, but the drop in shipments was 18% yoy.

U American HP, which was in second place, had a market share of 18%. During the reporting period, it shipped 35% less laptopsthan a year earlier, and this is the worst result among other companies from the top 5.

The top three is closed by the American Dell with a 17 percent share and a 6% drop in sales. It is followed by Taiwanese Acer (8%, drop 5%) and Asus (8%, minus 21%).

On Chinese The notebook market, one of the largest in the world, is a little different. Lenovo in first place (37%), followed by Dell (11%) and Huawei (10%), and in the tail of the top five are Asus (9%) and HP (7%). Importantly, in China Dell showed a 1% increase in shipments, Huawei’s grew by an impressive 101%. The remaining companies showed a negative result: -9% for Lenovo, -17% for Asus and -2% in HP.

Russian trace

All six companies featured in global and Chinese rankings Canalysstopped or at least abruptly reduced deliveries of its equipment to Russia. It is impossible to exclude the possibility that this step might affect the volume of their shipments, because many of them left the Russian market during the second quarter of 2022.

Russian market mobile PCs stoically held out until mid-summer 2022. However, the flight of global brands might not but affect him – in July 2022 he fell by 22% year-on-year in real terms.

Artificial intelligence

All the brands listed in the Canalys report lost their popularity and, consequently, their share of the laptop market in the first few months of their boycott once morest the Russians. The situation is aggravated by the fact that a shortage of spare parts has formed in Russia – for example, back in July 2022, services faced with an acute shortage of components for HP notebooks and Huawei.

As a result, Russians are now increasingly interested in the products of brands that have not turned away from them. So, by the end of autumn 2022, laptops of companies Xiaomi and Tecnoa plus distributors began to import equipment into the country earlier unknown mobile PC brands.
