Shortly following take-off in Lanzarote, a passenger plane had to make an emergency landing on the way to Hamburg. The reason was problems with one of the engines – which probably even had flames.

A machine of the charter airline Condor made an emergency landing in Fuerteventura shortly following take-off in Lanzarote with destination Hamburg due to an engine failure. An airline spokeswoman said on Saturday that the machine was able to land safely there.

Immediately following the start on Friday there was a malfunction in one of the engines, combined with cracking noises. The pilots would have initiated the usual procedure in such cases and declared an “air emergency” in order to be able to land at the alternate airport with priority.

Passengers might leave the aircraft

According to the spokeswoman, the 209 passengers and eight crew members were able to leave the machine in the normal way. Nobody was harmed. A replacement machine should come from Frankfurt on Saturday and bring the travelers to their destination Hamburg.

The “Bild” newspaper and other media had previously reported on the incident. A video broadcast by a Spanish broadcaster showed how flames started to break out of the right engine shortly following take-off. The cause of the engine malfunction is now to be investigated.
