Landslide in China leaves 4 dead and more than 900 evacuated

Four people died and 23 others are still missing after a landslide in China will hit the Tibetan prefecture of Garze in central Sichuan province on Saturday.

Prefectural Governor Feng Fagui told local media that a mudslide and rock slide caused a bridge between two tunnels on the Ya’an-Kangding Expressway to collapse, destroying several homes in Ridi Village and killing four people.

In addition, the collapse of the bridge caused four vehicles to fall into the river, and one person was rescued and hospitalized.

Landslide in China leaves several missing

Local authorities have launched a wide-ranging search and rescue operation, with 1,448 rescuers deployed so far. In addition, the evacuation and relocation of 939 affected residents has been completed, CCTV reports.

Numerous engineering vehicles and rescue equipment, including a helicopter, a drone and three sniffer dogs, are participating in the search and rescue operation.

The village lies in a valley at an altitude of 1,300 metres, while the surrounding mountains reach more than 5,000 metres above sea level.

The Ministry of Water Resources has deployed an emergency hydrological monitoring team to the site of the bridge collapse to assist in search and rescue efforts.
