Lando Norris’ Qualifying Struggles and Determination at the 2023 F1 Mexican Grand Prix

Lando Norris finished qualifying for the 2023 F1 Round 20 Mexican Grand Prix in 19th place. He explained how an ill-timed yellow flag led to him being eliminated from Q1 of qualifying and having to start the race from the back of the grid. McLaren’s Norris, who was closest to pacesetter Max Verstappen in Friday’s free practice, was in good form heading into this session.

However, it was a dramatic qualifying for Norris, who finished 19th. Since Yuki Tsunoda will start from the back of the grid, he will start the race from 18th place. Asked what happened after the session did not go as planned, Norris said: “I locked up and went off the track on the first run. It was unfortunate that Fernando (Alonso’s spin) brought out a yellow flag during that run, but in the one chance I had to put in a lap, I locked up and went off the track.” Asked if he was happy with the medium tires, Norris replied: “Yeah, no problem.” Despite his starting position, Norris is confident the car still has the pace to advance in Sunday’s race, with teammate Oscar Piastri qualifying seventh. “I mean, it’s hard to go backwards. I’d be worried if we went backwards tomorrow,” Norris said. “The pace is good and Oscar is doing a good job. If I had set my lap time earlier, I might have been in first place. But I have a lot of ‘shoulda woulda coulda’s right now. It’s a shame. But my goal is points, so I’ll see what I can do.”
