The initiative by six young people from Portugal was described in advance as “historic” and “the biggest climate lawsuit of all time”. In the courtroom they will meet 80 lawyers from accused governments. The verdict is expected next year.
A lawsuit filed by six children and young people once morest 32 European countries calling for more climate protection will be heard on Wednesday before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg. The young people from Portugal between the ages of 11 and 24 accuse European countries of exacerbating the climate crisis and thereby endangering the future of their generations.
The EMGR push was described by media and environmental groups as “historic” and “the largest climate lawsuit ever.” In addition to the age of the plaintiffs, the size of the trial and the number of countries accused are unusual. A spokeswoman for the Portuguese said that over 80 lawyers would be present in the courtroom on behalf of the reprimanded governments. The plaintiffs would be represented by just six lawyers.
If the plaintiffs from Portugal are right, the ECHR might call on the governments of the EU member states and the co-defendant states Norway, Russia, Turkey, Switzerland and Great Britain to adopt and adhere to stricter climate targets. A verdict is not expected until next year.
Originally 33 countries were sued and the ECHR continues to mention this number, but the youth decided to leave Ukraine out because of Russia’s war of aggression. (APA/dpa)
