Caritas President appreciates government investment projects, but reminds that poverty-stricken people suffer most from the ecological crisis

Vienna (KAP) Caritas President Michael Landau has reminded the federal government not to forget people affected by poverty in the upcoming ecological transformation. After all, they suffered the most from the ecological crisis, which they themselves were least responsible for, wrote Landau on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. “It would be unfair – and short-sighted – to abandon these people now in the necessary ecological transformation.”

With his tweet, Landau reacted to Finance Minister Magnus Brunner’s announcement that, as part of the national “Carbon Management Strategy”, a total of 5 billion euros will be invested in ecological transformation in the coming years up to 2026 – in particular in the storage, processing and use of CO2 invest. “Are similar amounts also provided for the necessary ecological transformation in the social area?” Landau asked the government.

At the invitation of Finance Minister Brunner, a group of experts is to meet in mid-September to discuss the project. According to the Ministry of Finance, entrepreneurs, representatives of the federal states and the parties in the National Council, the social partners, Greenpeace, WWF, Global 2000 and FFF, representatives of BOKU and the TU Vienna, the Montan Uni Leoben, the University of Linz and the Wegener Center are invited as well as representatives of the Ministry of Climate Protection, the Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs, the Federal Chancellery and the Federal Environment Agency.
