Joshi’s Dhruvam was one of the super hit films in Malayalam. But director and screenwriter A. said that the story was prepared for another film and later turned into a pole. K. Sajan says. While talking regarding his new film Pulimada starring Joju George, he shared his old movie memories. Sajan was speaking to Cannes Channel Media.
‘When I wanted to write a screenplay, there was a hanging in Thiruvananthapuram at that time. Later, news regarding it started flooding the media. As now there are no channels, only newspapers. After that I tried to learn more regarding the death penalty.
The plot revolves around the hanging of a major suspect. A common man who has nothing to do with him kills a man who has killed many people. An executioner for hire. It was a dark movie full of prison and police. Later I felt that the film was very serious. I have some friends who want me to write and get into films. I spoke regarding this story to one of them, my friend Jay. Jayan said this is a great story and it would be better to do it with Murali Chetan.
So one day I told the story to Murali Chetan at a location. After hearing the story, Murali Chetan hugged me and said, let’s do it, you write it. I was very happy to hear that. Because a great actor said okay. So the story continued to be written but due to some financial problems it was a bit difficult to proceed.
Meanwhile, Dennis had told Joseph and other friends of the film all regarding this story. Everyone used to tell me it was great. It was then that Suresh Balaji came to know that he was going to make a film with Lal sir. They need a quick story. Jayan tells me this information. So I went to a movie location to meet Lalsar. Finally I got a chance to tell the story to Lalsar.
After listening to my story, Lalsar told me that it was very violent and very dark. There was some difficulty then in thinking of Lal Sir as an executioner. Later on the trip back home I decided that this executioner story was a bit difficult to work out.
The next day I told Jay that we can do this only if Murali Chetan thinks. Our heroes have such a problem. Even though they might play gray shade roles, Anna had limitations to act in super brutal roles. Later, SN Swamy sir suddenly says that the film needs a story. I had no interest in giving this story. After talking to Swami sir for a long time, I finally felt that it was right and I am giving the story.
Joshi sir was the director of the movie. So we got together and made a one line. Swamy also brought cinema to a Tamil culture. Later, Joshi sir worked on the script in a good way and changed it to the way it is now. That’s how the pole happens,’ says Sajan.
