Lakers’ Free Agency Moves: Declining Options for Mo Bamba and Malik Beasley

2023-06-30 04:37:00

On the eve of the opening of free agency, the Lakers had important decisions to make regarding the future of two players who arrived last February, during the trade deadline: I am Bamba et Malik Beasley. The former had an unsecured $10.3 million final contract year for the 2023/24 season. The second was dependent on a ‘team option’ which amounts to 16.5 million dollars.

According to ESPN, the franchise has chosen not to guarantee either contract for next season. In other words, Mo Bamba and Malik Beasley are officially free of any contract, and will be able to commit where they wish from this Friday. Nevertheless, a return of the two players for less important contracts cannot be ruled out. Disturbed by an ankle injury, Mo Bamba only played nine games for the Lakers. He averaged 3.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. As for Malik Beasley, he is completely out of Darvin Ham’s rotation in the playoffs.

Better equipped for free agency

Two choices which are therefore far from surprising on the part of Rob Pelinka, and which will allow the Lakers to remain under the ceiling of the luxury tax of 172 million dollars for 2023/24, but also to be able to use the entire mid-level exception, which amounts to 12.4 million dollars. It could thus be offered to players such as Bruce Brown or Brook Lopez, who are among the main targets.

The California franchise could also share the mid-level exception on two or three players. In this case, several names are mentioned like Eric Gordon, who was recently cut by the Clippers, or Dennis Schröder, who was rather a satisfaction last season in Los Angeles.
