LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Christian Miller has reportedly confessed to law enforcement that his inability to control his temper drove him to cover a child’s face with a blanket in a desperate attempt to silence the toddler’s cries. This disturbing revelation has prompted prosecutors to file multiple serious felony charges against Miller concerning the alleged abuse of the young child.
On September 23, deputies from the Tippecanoe County sheriff’s office responded to an emergency call from a local hospital, which had received a report illuminating possible child abuse. A concerned woman narrated to officers that upon retrieving her two children from Miller’s care, she discovered visible bruises on her 2-year-old’s shoulders and neck that raised immediate concerns for the child’s welfare.
After documenting her child’s injuries through photographs, the mother proceeded to seek medical assistance from the child’s pediatrician. The pediatrician then promptly referred her to a local hospital, where the authorities were notified of the alarming situation. Prosecutors reported that a detailed strangulation examination was carried out on the toddler, revealing that the injuries sustained were in line with indications of strangulation.
A forensic nurse examiner, conducting an assessment, identified petechiae—small dark spots on the skin attributed to broken capillaries—around the toddler’s neck, which also appeared under his chin and behind his ears. When the mother confronted Miller regarding the child’s injuries, he suggested that he had merely noticed them as a rash while giving the toddler a bath, as stated in the affidavit.
In an additional investigative step, police interviewed the child’s 4-year-old brother, who recounted that he had witnessed Miller choking his sibling during their time at Miller’s residence. The older brother revealed that the younger child was struggling to breathe at the time of this distressing incident.
Further corroborating testimony came from a relative of the child’s mother, who reported seeing tiny red dots around the toddler’s neck upon his return from Miller’s home. According to her observations, the dots resembled blood blisters and did not seem to align with characteristics of a simple rash.
During an interview on October 28, Miller stated to the police that he struggles with an uncontrollable temper. He explained that the child, while in his care, would not cease crying or fall asleep, despite Miller’s attempts to comfort him. Frustrated and desperate, Miller recounted that he bunched up the child’s blanket and pressed it over the toddler’s face, intending “to muffle his crying,” as issued in the prosecutor’s statements. Allegedly, he utilized his right hand to apply pressure from the blanket onto the child’s face until the crying subsided.
Miller now faces grave charges, including battery resulting in serious bodily injury, battery against a child under the age of 14, and strangulation. He is currently detained at the Tippecanoe County Jail, with a cash bond set at $5,000 and a surety bond of $50,000.
