American singer Lady Gaga emerged from a typically Parisian metro station built for the occasion along the Seine to give the first big surprise musical performance of the Olympic opening ceremony, with a cabaret number.
The American actress and singer dared to use French to cover ‘Mon truc en plumes’ by Zizi Jeanmaire, a classic from the sixties.
Dressed in black, she was accompanied by a dozen dancers carrying pink pompoms who were in charge of hiding the artist’s identity until the precise moment, in front of an audience that immediately went from uncertainty to applause.
Lady Gaga appeared in the first part of the route along the Seine, shortly after a mysterious boat with children and a hooded figure launched the parade, in a small boat with the Olympic flame, from the Austerlitz bridge.
Her performance included a piano, but the singer of ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Born This Way’ only touched the keys briefly, as the main focus of the performance was a tribute to French cabaret.
Although her participation had been kept secret, Lady Gaga’s participation in the ceremony was practically an open secret after she had been spotted on numerous occasions this week in the French capital.
She is known not only for her music and film, but also for her activism, especially for her support of the LGBT community, which considers her a symbol.
Lady Gaga is in the run-up to the premiere of her film ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ at the Venice Film Festival, which will compete for the Golden Lion and in which she shares the bill with Joaquin Phoenix, and also announced her seventh studio album in May.
