Downtown LA Transformer Fire Contained, Officials Say
A fire that broke out in a transformer at a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) facility early Saturday morning has largely subsided, leaving firefighters to focus on containing the remaining flames and protecting nearby structures.
The blaze was reported around 12:23 a.m. at a LADWP building located at 560 S. San Julian St. between Fifth and Sixth streets in downtown Los Angeles. The facility, which houses multiple transformers, saw flames concentrated on one, possibly two, of the units, according to LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.
While most of the fire has been extinguished, firefighters are allowing the remaining flames to burn themselves out, explaining that this is the safest approach given the high-voltage electrical equipment involved.
Protecting Nearby Buildings
“The fire will continue to safely burn itself out,” fire authorities stated. “LAFD crews are allowing the flames to burn off the high voltage electrical equipment ‘while ensuring the exposed building is defended and all windows closed to prevent smoke infiltration,’ ” Stewart said.
Firefighters are taking a cautious approach, avoiding the use of water to douse the flames due to the risk associated with the energized equipment. Their primary focus is on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, including an exposed apartment complex.
“Firefighters are also defending an exposed apartment building and are not using water to douse the flames, due to the high voltage electrical equipment in the facility,” Stewart added.
Safety Measures in Place
As a precaution, pedestrians in the vicinity of the LADWP facility are being moved to a safe location. Firefighters are also awaiting the arrival of DWP representatives to assess the situation and assist with the response.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
