Mexico City.- Given the lack of economic resources, the five brightest high school students in the country in the area of Physics will not be able to compete in the 2023 European Physics Olympiad that will take place from June 16 to 20 in Hannover, Germany.
Rodrigo Pelayo, coordinator of the Olympics of the Mexican Physics Society, assured that the support of Conacyt was sought since January, however, there was no response until a couple of weeks ago, and although help is available, there is no idea when it will arrive. this.
Previously, the one that financed the activities of the Mexican Physics Olympiad, with more than three decades of history, was Conacyt.
“This year it has been a little delayed. I had not had contact with the people from Conacyt although I was contacting them, but I finally had contact with the person (María de Lourdes González Jiménez, director of horizontal knowledge networks) in charge of attending to the It’s a matter of all the Olympics, not just the Physics one; he already told me that this year there may be support for us. The only detail is that he didn’t tell us how, or when, or how much,” he said.
Through its social networks, the Mexican Physics Olympiad launched a campaign to obtain funds with the purpose of obtaining the resources for the participation of the national team in the European Physics Olympiad 2023, however, only 10 percent was obtained. than what is required, which oscillates between 200 and 300 thousand pesos, which includes the registration of the team to the Olympics. Given this, Pelayo explained, the cancellation was decided.
Pelayo specified that financing is currently being sought for the national team to attend the International Physics Olympiad to be held in Tokyo, Japan, from July 10 to 17, which, he specified, is the most prestigious.
“The important event for us really is the International Physics Olympiad. It is the World Championship. It is the most prestigious and high-level competition in Physics worldwide.
“With the announcement of the cancellation, a businessman told us that he was going to give us support for the International Olympics. It is a much more important Olympics for us and we have been participating for 30 years (…), we cannot afford to miss that competition.”
He indicated that this competition implies more expenses and might cost up to 400 thousand pesos.
Most of the members of the Mexican team are 18 years old. The young people come from Baja California, Sinaloa, Mexico City, Sonora and Yucatán, four of them study in public schools and one in private.
“They are the best five in the country. Give me the best guy from any school and (…) they are better than anyone, and obviously because they have also gone through a training process, elimination. They are the best of regarding 7,000 young people who participated in regional, state, national (Olympics), “he said.
