The British Labour Party has claimed a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections held in the United Kingdom on Thursday, according to an exit poll commissioned by the BBC.

If predictions are correct, Labour would have won 410 seats, compared to 131 for the ruling Conservative Party, recording its worst result in more than seven decades.

This way, Labour leader Keir Starmer, 61, is set to become Britain’s next prime minister.

Labour will return to power following 14 years of conservative governments, surpassing the majority needed in the House of Commons (326) to be able to govern alone.

This election marks the collapse of the Conservatives, just following they achieved a historic victory in the December 2019 elections, when Boris Johnson won with an overwhelming majority.

That had been the Conservative Party’s best result since 1987, under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher.

The UK has a parliamentary system, unlike in Latin America, where most systems are presidential. Therefore, the leader of the party that wins the majority of seats in Parliament becomes Prime Minister.

Starmer was elected in 2020 to succeed Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party. He had previously been head of the British Public Prosecution Service (Crown Prosecution ServiceCPS).

Until the last moment the different parties tried to convince the undecided, but Polls on voting intentions had already predicted a landslide victory for Labour.

According to the poll commissioned by the BBC, Labour would win 411 seats, the Conservatives 131, the Liberal Democrats 61 and the populists of Reform UK 13.

Meanwhile, the Scottish nationalists of the SNP would win 10 seats, the Welsh nationalists of Plaid Cymru 4 and the Greens 2.

The exit poll is based on data from voters at around 130 polling stations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Rishi Sunak tried until the last moment to convince undecided voters.

“Uncertain” circumstances

Despite the efforts of the current Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, the Conservatives have not managed to turn things around as predicted by the polls published in recent weeks.

Instead, BBC projections confirm that Reform UKthe populist right-wing party led by Nigel Farage, will have 13 seats in the British Parliament.

Farage, promoter of the referendum Brexit In the United Kingdom, she forged her political career campaigning for the country to leave the European Union.

The last British general election was held in December 2019 and the next one was due to take place in January 2025. However, Rishi Sunak announced an early election in May.

The premier accepted that The country was facing “uncertain” circumstances due to events such as the war in Ukraine and inflation affecting British pockets.

This, together with the pressure he received from those close to him, as pointed out in May by BBC News political editor Chris Mason, accelerated the decision to bring forward the date of the polls.
