The consumer price index (CPI) in the city of Laâyoune experienced an increase of 0.5% during the month of August compared to the previous month, going from 118.4 to 119.
This increase results from a joint increase in the food index of 0.8% and the non-food index of 0.3%, according to a note from the Regional Directorate of the High Commission for Planning (HCP) in Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra.
Thus, the index for the “Food products and non-alcoholic beverages” division increased by 0.8% between July and August 2023, specifies the same source, noting that this increase concerns in particular the prices of “Vegetables” by 6.6%. , the prices of “Fruit” by 4.2%, the prices of “Meat” by 2.4%, and the prices of “Sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery” by 1.9%.

These also include the prices of “Mineral waters, refreshing drinks, fruit and vegetable juices” of 0.7% and the prices of “Oils and fats” of 0.2%, compared to a decrease in the prices of “Fish and seafood” by -9.9%, “Bread and cereals” by -0.8%, “Milk, cheese and eggs” and “Coffee, tea and cocoa” by -0.1%.
Compared to the same month of the previous year, the annual consumer price index for the city of Laâyoune increased by 6.5% during the month of August 2023. This increase results from an increase in the prices of food products by 12.4% and prices of non-food products by 2%.
The percentage change for non-food items ranged from a decrease of -0.8% for “Transportation” and “Education” to an increase of 7.7% for “Miscellaneous goods and services”.
