MTÜ Kodukant Läänemaa is waiting for candidates for the Läänemaa village of the year and village mover of the year contest until October 16.

The purpose of the competition is not just to award prizes, but it is an opportunity to highlight the best players in the communities, whose energy and actions help to shape the life and image of Läänemaa. We recognize both villages and village leaders for their contribution to community development and rural development.

Lääne County Village of the Year is chosen over a year, and Lääne County villages, village districts and small towns can apply for the honorary title. In the past, Haeska, Piirsalu, Kiideva, Rälby, Virtsu, Kinks, Kirbla, Üdruma, Soolu, Puise have won the title. The winner will represent Lääne County at the nationwide Village of the Year 2025 competition, which is organized by the NGO Estonian village movement Kodukant.

For the second time, together with the village of the year competition, the title of village mover of the year is awarded to highlight the role of active leaders in promoting village life and maintaining rural life. In 2022, Liina-Meta Kuuskmann from Liiv village of Lääne-Nigula parish was chosen as the village organizer of the year.

Anyone can submit candidates to the competition – be it local governments, the villages themselves or a third party who knows an active village mover. The village of the year and the village mover are selected by the evaluation committee, which includes representatives of Haapsalu, Lääne-Nigula and Vormsi, SA Läänemaa, MTÜ Kodukant Läänemaa and MTÜ Külaliikumine Kodukant.

In the case of villages, intra-community cooperation and joint activities, developments in the living environment, cooperation with municipalities and other organizations, and clear development plans and their impact on the community for the next five years are evaluated. Läänemaa’s village of the year is awarded with a road sign of the village of the year title and a prize money of 1,000 euros for the development of village life.

Ott Liivlaid, village head of Puis, who received the title of Lääne County Village of the Year 2022, definitely invites the villages to submit their candidacy: “The competition made me look at the activities of my village with a completely fresh eye and better appreciate what has been achieved”. Puise also won the special award of the Estonian LEADER Union at the national competition, standing out for its balanced diversity.

Läänemaa’s village of the year and village leader will be announced at a festive gala on December 5.
