On Friday, July 5, Canada defeated the Venezuelan national team in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Copa América. In this way, the Vinotinto said goodbye to the tournament and now Canada must face Argentina on July 9. The match took place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (United States).
In the 13th minute, Jacob Shaffelburg scored the first goal for Canada and Salomón Rondón tied the game for Venezuela in the 64th minute. This result led to a penalty shootout, where the Canadian team emerged victorious.

The only time that La Vinotinto has made it to the semi-finals in this tournament was in 2011, at the Copa América in Argentina. They lost in a penalty shootout.

First time

The second half began with Venezuelan Eduard Bello being fouled on the left flank in the 47th minute. Derek Cornelius of Canada was yellow-carded in the 49th minute for a foul on Soteldo.
Venezuela made its first change in the 59th minute, with Jhonder Cádiz coming on and Cristian Cásseres Jr. coming off. Canada also made a change in the 61st minute, with Jacob Shaffelburg coming on and Liam Millar coming on. In the 69th minute, Salomón Rondón surprised Venezuela with a goal and tied the game.
In the 73rd minute the match was temporarily halted due to an injury to Canada’s Derek Cornelius; and in the 83rd minute Venezuela made two more changes, with Eduard Bello and Yeferson Soteldo coming off and Jefferson Savarino and Matías Lacava coming on.
In the 90th minute, the Vinotinto made a couple more changes: Wilker Ángel and Tomás Rincón came on and Yordan Osorio and José Andrés Martínez left. Thus, following the extra minutes of regulation, the game ended and the game will go to a penalty shootout to decide the result of this game.
Salomón Rondón started kicking for Venezuela and scored the first kick in this round. Jonathan David kicked for Canada and also scored the first. The second for the Vinotinto was for Yangel Herrera, who missed the kick; and for Canada Millar also missed his second penalty.
Tomás Rincón got Venezuela’s third and Canada also scored, with Mombito. Venezuela’s fourth was not achieved, Savarino missed it, as did Canada, who also missed their fourth shot with Eustaquio. Cádiz got Venezuela’s fifth and Canada also scored with Davies.
Wilker Angel missed the sixth for Venezuela and with one more run scored by Canada the match ended. Venezuela was eliminated and the Canadian team moved on to the semi-finals, where they will face Argentina.
