To cope with the shortage of IT specialists affecting Switzerland, La Poste has decided to open a first IT development site abroad. On Tuesday, the yellow giant inaugurated its new premises in the Portuguese capital Lisbon in the presence of La Matinale.
The new IT campus of La Poste is now located in the heart of the Lisbon city, in the very popular rua Castilho, a stone’s throw from the avenue de la Liberté, the most chic and emblematic artery of the Portuguese capital. The brand new premises are established on two floors for a total area of 900 m2 and already accommodate 29 employees.
“All our offices have been designed so that our employees are creative and innovative”, explains the director of this Portuguese branch Nuno Pedro in La Matinale.

We hope that it is here that the next great idea for La Poste will arise”, aims to -he.
Dealing with a future shortage
Last September, the former federal company decided to settle in the white city. This decision raised many questions. But La Poste had justified its choice for one reason: the future lack of IT professionals in Switzerland. According to its estimates, the country will face a shortage of 35,000 IT specialists by 2028 (see box).
“Currently in Switzerland, we are facing what is called a ‘war for talents’. There is extremely strong competition in the recruitment of specialists in the IT field. We can add to this the fact that the country has many employees of the generation of baby boomers who will soon be retiring. We had to find a recruitment solution elsewhere”, specifies Nuno Pedro.

The Lisbon director, on the other hand, brushes aside the argument of cheaper labor in Portugal: “Our motivation was in no way to reduce or optimize costs. If La Poste came to Portugal, it was before everything to find quality staff.” The yellow giant targets four sectors: business analysis, software development, data analysis and cybersecurity.
Identify market needs
Among the Portuguese specialists involved: Virginia Nunes. This young woman is a business analyst and she joined the company last month. She is already hard at work.
“Our main function is to identify market needs and translate them into technical terms for programmers. We then look for an IT solution that can easily be used by the users who have contacted us”, she explains, also pointing out that the sector is booming in Portugal.
La Poste, whose IT department has some 1,300 employees in total, hopes to recruit 150 more on the Lisbon site in the coming years.
