It all started with a rock concert at the Confort Moderne. Mathias Von Petrolo was only 15 years old at the time. Passionate about the rock scene and fanzines since his youngest age, the little Poitevin naturally went to the Fanzinothèque. It must be said that the place has something to make any fanzine lover fall in love with a collection unique in Europe. He tried his hand at string instruments to imitate his favorite artists, in vain. But not enough to demoralize the teenager who intends to contribute in his own way to the punk scene made in Poitou. For him, there was no question of going to Paris where punk and Do it yourself culture is clearly more present. He wants to spread the passion for this culture to as many people as possible from his hometown. “They often say that the grass is greener elsewhere. I always wanted to practice my passion in my city. The fanzine established itself as the media of the punk world during my adolescence. I moved towards its creation before creating a bookstore.” This is how La Pétroleuse was born, from an unwavering love for this scene and two books: Hardcore California and Banned in DC. Both books acted as an electroshock for Mathias. Thus was born la-petroleuse.com.

“My mantra with the Pétroleuse is sharing for all.”

According to him, the online bookstore was the most appropriate option for sharing committed, nonconformist literature. Furthermore, creating a physical bookstore today is “certain suicide”. Despite a fragile economy, the bookseller manages to generate an income, enough to live on love and rock’n’roll. Thanks to a selection of works imported by a partner from the United States, the site lapetroleuse.com/fr offers a limited but choice range on different social themes: ecology, history, class struggle, etc. “Access to culture and this type of literature remains very limited. My mantra with La Pétroleuse is sharing for all. The online bookstore allows you to distribute to as many people as possible, whether you are from Paris or the depths of the countryside.”
