la micro-macro bass music d’Hassan Abou Alam

For the last PAM Club of the year – and of the series – the Egyptian Hassan Abou Alam rewards us with a set as massive as it is meticulous, like Shalfatahis latest EP to date.

Cairo DJ and producer Hassan Abou Alam launched into the music industry in 2008, evolving from electric house music to bass music tinged with IDM, including the darkest techno. After notable stints on the Rhythm Section and Casa Voyager labels, he landed on Banoffee Pies with Falsean EP released in 2022 which we praised on PAM “finely crafted electro, elegant in its rises and stuffed with a dark and discreet groove” of the fine technician. The one who cites American artist Larry Powers as his mentor has just been released Shalfataa new EP accompanied by 4 solid remixes by Joaquin Cornejo, Traka, or his compatriots Zuli and 3phaz.

Between heavy bass music and salient electronica, Hassan injects elements of traditional Egyptian folklore into a dark and sometimes disturbing, but always danceable whole, dotted with micro-details. Enough to nourish his immersive live performances, which already delighted us in 2019, as in the refined chaos of this Boiler Room!
