Now part of the CMA CGM group, La Méridionale has just announced the acquisition of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels.
Things are changing in the maritime sector. This Wednesday, May 31, the French giant CMA CGM formalized the acquisition of the company La Méridionale from the refrigerated transport group Stef.
La Méridionale, which currently owns four ships transporting goods and passengers, provides rotations within the framework of a public service delegation between Marseilles, Ajaccio and Porto-Vecchio as well as a link between Marseilles and Tangier, in Morocco. The company, which employs 600 people, will soon join the new division ” specialized shipping ” of the group.
Greener ships thanks to LNG
In the wake of this acquisition, La Méridionale announced the forthcoming order for two LNG vessels.
« We are now launching a call for tenders for the construction of two ro-pax ships (freight and passengers) to serve Corsica “, indicated his new boss of the company, Jean-Emmanuel Sauvée. Fueled by LNG, these two vessels will also eventually have the capacity to run on methanol.
They will replace the Kalliste and Girolata, the two oldest units in the Méridionale fleet. For now, no launch date has been announced.
