SAO PAULO (AP) — The president of the Spanish La Liga Javier Tebas apologized to Vinicius Junior on Wednesday for statements in which he appeared to dismiss the episode of racism that affected Real Madrid’s Brazilian star over the weekend.

Tebas repeated in several interviews with Brazilian TV channels that he regretted his comments, considering them “inopportune” and equating them with a “misunderstanding.”

Immediately following the racist insults uttered on Sunday by Valencia fans once morest Vinicius, Tebas questioned the footballer, for criticizing the Spanish La Liga. He added that the Real Madrid star did not appear at the talks on racism that he himself had requested.

Now the Spanish leader has said that he regrets his statements.

The racist insults to Vinicius occurred during the league match that Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Valencia’s fiefdom. The footballer has complained of similar abuses in the past.

“I have to apologize and forgive,” Tebas told TV Globo, referring to the tweet in which he criticized the soccer player.

After what was published on Sunday by Thebes, Vinícius responded indignantly.

“Once once more, instead of criticizing racists, the president of LaLiga appears on social networks to attack me,” he wrote. “No matter how much you talk and pretend not to read, the image of your championship has faltered… I am not your friend to talk regarding racism. I want actions and punishments.”

The Brazilian player has not responded to Tebas’ apologies.
