This anniversary coincides with another anniversary. On Saturday, August 24, and Sunday, August 25, 2024, the Évreux Comic Book Festival (Eure) will celebrate its 25th edition in front of the town hall. The poster, created by Romain Hugault, leaves no room for doubt: a pin-up sitting on a Jeep prominently highlights the theme of the D-Day and Liberation (the 80th anniversary of which is celebrated throughout the weekend).
Less Space
With so many editions behind them, the organization is perfectly streamlined, and the process is well-oiled. It was a relaxed Raphaël Tanguy that we met ahead of the festival to discuss this edition, which resembles the others, but carries its own set of small changes.
First, there’s the venue, or rather, the space allocated to the event. Due to the Liberation festivities, the Georges-Brassens square is not available for second-hand vendors. Therefore, the layout of the participants had to be adjusted on the General-de-Gaulle square. The second-hand merchants (about ten of them) will be positioned at the foot of the town hall’s steps, a spot typically reserved for authors.
These authors will now be located on the other side of the square. “There’s a significant number of new authors this year, as we have refreshed the lineup. Some haven’t been here in a long time and are making a comeback. Different authors will be present on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, around fifteen authors will be centered around this year’s theme, which is very engaging, with plenty of comic book content,” notes Raphaël Tanguy.
In total, the 25th festival will host around sixty authors, which is fewer than usual due to space constraints.

You will see a Bernard Minet
Manga will receive more visibility this year, with the presence of six authors, including Tonda, who has created a manga about the liberation (D-Day stories, published by Orep). The stage set up in the Georges-Brassens square, used for liberation concerts on Saturday, will also be used on Sunday for the cosplay parade at 3 PM, which will precede a concert by a well-known figure from children’s television, Bernard Minet.
The singer of the intros from Bioman, The Knights of the Zodiac, Juliette je t’aime will take the microphone to perform some of these nostalgic songs from the 1980s and 1990s, along with possible hits from Les Musclés (The Merguez Party?).
Another celebrity gracing the streets of Évreux is Jean-Christian Fraiscinet, who is known for his portrayal of Christian Bodin. Several comics from the Bodin’s series have been released, but he will be there to present La Fine équipe, adapted from the show he created and performed on stage.
Among the side events, there will be a conference by comic book writer Jérôme Félix discussing the secrets of comic book authors on Saturday, August 23 at 3 PM at the media library. Movie cars (a DeLorean, a Jurassic Park Jeep, and a Peugeot 405 from the movie Taxi) will be on display, and the Fr.Kawaï association will host parent-child workshops (badge making, puppetry, etc.). “We haven’t emphasized the activities since there are already quite a few provided by the town,” notes Raphaël Tanguy.

As a comic book enthusiast, the festival organizer wears another hat as the head of Varou. The weekend is traditionally a time to launch new works. First, there’s a collective work (by fourteen authors, illustrators, or colorists) focusing on the history and legends of Gisors (previously, Brionne, Conches, and Évreux had their own comics). Then, there’s the reissue of Denis Diderot’s novel La religieuse, enhanced by drawings from Pascal Croci. This format marks “a first for Varou,” emphasizes Raphaël Tanguy.
Finally – and many fans will still queue for autographs from Juan-Maria Cordoba and Fred Romanuik – Nono & Moumoune return with their seventh volume.
The 25th BD festival in Évreux will take place on Saturday, August 24, and Sunday, August 25, from 10 AM to 6 PM on the General-de-Gaulle square. Entrance is free.

25e Édition du Festival de Bande Dessinée d’Évreux : Un Hommage au Débarquement et à la Libération
C’est un anniversaire qui s’inscrit dans un autre. Les 24 et 25 août 2024, le festival de bande dessinée d’Évreux (Eure) célébrera sa 25e édition, devant l’hôtel de ville. L’affiche, conçue par le talentueux Romain Hugault, évoque un thème emblématique : la pin-up assise sur une Jeep, rendant hommage au Débarquement et à la Libération, dont les 80 ans sont célébrés tout au long du week-end.
Aménagement du Festival : Moins d’Espace, Plus d’Action
Avec tant d’éditions, l’organisation du festival est bien rodée. Cependant, cette année, des ajustements étaient nécessaires. Le square Georges-Brassens n’est pas disponible en raison des festivités de la Libération, ce qui a conduit à une reconfiguration de l’espace sur la place du Général-de-Gaulle. Les vendeurs d’occasions seront désormais regroupés au pied des marches de la mairie, là où on avait l’habitude de croiser les auteurs.
Du côté des auteurs, l’événement mettra en lumière une soixantaine d’artistes, un nombre réduit par contraintes d’espace. Raphaël Tanguy, organisateur du festival, a indiqué : « Il y a une grosse proportion de nouveaux auteurs. Nous avons renouvelé notre sélection. » Ce renouvellement d’auteurs se traduit par une diversité enrichissante, car quelques-uns n’étaient pas revenus depuis longtemps. Le programme prévoit également une quinzaine d’auteurs qui s’inscrivent dans la thématique de cette édition, faisant écho à l’histoire riche de la bande dessinée.
Le Manga à l’Honneur et des Événements Époustouflants
Une attention particulière sera accordée au manga cette année, avec la présence de six auteurs, parmi lesquels Tonda, qui a réalisé un manga portant sur la libération intitulé D-Day stories, publié par Orep. Le festival propose également un défilé de cosplay prévu le dimanche à 15 h, qui précédera le concert de Bernard Minet, figure emblématique des années 1980-1990, connu pour ses célèbres génériques.
Jean-Christian Fraiscinet, également présent, représentera son dernier projet La Fine équipe, inspiré du spectacle qu’il a présenté sur scène. En outre, une exposition de voitures de films emblématiques (comme une DeLorean et une Jeep de Jurassic Park) ajoutera une dimension unique au festival.
Ateliers et Conférences : Une Programmation Enrichissante
Le festival n’est pas uniquement centré sur la bande dessinée. Une conférence animée par le scénariste Jérôme Félix sur les coulisses du métier d’auteur est prévue samedi à 15 h à la médiathèque. Quant aux enfants et aux familles, l’association Fr.Kawaï proposera des ateliers créatifs autour de la fabrication de badges et de pantins. Raphaël Tanguy précise : « Nous n’avons pas trop insisté sur les animations, la ville propose déjà une multitude d’activités. »
Nouveautés de la Maison d’Édition Varou
Raphaël Tanguy, en tant qu’éditeur de la maison Varou, voit cet événement comme une plateforme idéale pour présenter ses dernières créations. Cette année, deux gros titres attirent l’attention :
- Un ouvrage collectif sur l’histoire et les légendes de Gisors, en featuring avec quatorze auteurs, dessinateurs et coloristes.
- La réédition de La religieuse de Denis Diderot, illustré par Pascal Croci, une première pour la maison d’édition.
De plus, le très attendu Nono & Moumoune revient avec un 7e tome qui promet de ravir les fans. La présence de ces nouveautés est une opportunité pour les amoureux de la BD d’assister à des séances de dédicace avec les créateurs.
