[OSEN=손찬익 기자] The LA Dodgers, who won the battle for ‘FA biggest fish’ Shohei Ohtani, are still thirsty for strengthening their power. They are eyeing Josh Hader, who played as a firefighter for the San Diego Padres.
Ohtani, who signed a 10-year contract with the Dodgers worth $700 million, receives only $20 million during the contract period. Otani took the club’s financial burden off the table and allowed it to focus on aggressive investments.
According to a report by American sports media outlet ‘The Athletic’ on the 12th, Ohtani agreed to defer payment of $68 million of his $70 million annual salary. The deferred amount ($680 million) will be paid interest-free from 2034 to 2043.
Local reports say that the club proposed that Otani receive an amount equivalent to 97% of his annual salary starting 10 years from now. This was taken into consideration so that the club might continuously strengthen its power. Accordingly, the Dodgers are now able to recruit additional players in the free agent market.
‘Dodger Blue’, which mainly reports Dodgers news, said on the 13th (hereinfollowing Korean time), “The Dodgers are in desperate need of reinforcements as starters and signed Ohtani to a 10-year contract worth a total of $700 million. Ohtani can double as a pitcher, but he will undergo surgery on his right elbow and miss next year. He said, “As is well known, the Dodgers are continuing to show interest in Yoshinobu Yamamoto and are also eyeing Josh Hader.”
Hader is a special firefighter with 165 saves in his big league career, and has reached the 30-save mark four times in his personal career. He made 33 saves this season, keeping San Diego on the back foot.
The media said, “It is natural that the Dodgers, who need to strengthen their starting lineup, are interested in Yamamoto. Hader will perform better than Craig Kimbrel and is likely to sign a multi-year contract as the best relief pitcher in the free agent market.” He said.
In addition, “Hader had 2 wins, 3 losses, 33 saves, and an ERA of 1.28 with San Diego this season, and has served as a closer for the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego for the past three years. He has not pitched more than one inning since September 2019.” He added. /what@osen.co.kr
