La Calera: they argue over the smoke from the burning of an illegal dump

Due to a complaint, the Justice was asked to investigate the contamination by burning garbage in La Calera.

The proposal of an opposition mayor is that the municipality would throw garbage on a piece of land located within the “Bamba” Recreational and Natural Water Reserve, an area considered a red category of preservation by Law 9,814 of the Land Management of Native Forests of Córdoba.

The criminal investigation is for pollution and environmental degradation. According to the complainant, councilman Fernando Rambaldi (of La Calera Neighborhood Meeting), the fact has a great environmental impact due to the burning of waste, taking into account that there are several nearby neighborhoods and that it is a few meters from the E route. -55.

The garbage dump has been burning for days, said the councilor, and the constant smoke ends up in the houses as well as polluting the soil and air.

“The smell of burning garbage is unbearable, but also due to the leaching process (with the rain, decomposed organic matter carries chemical compounds and biological materials) it contaminates the Suquía River, which is 300 meters away. It is a very serious impact, ”he said.

“The municipality is throwing urban waste at a property that is not enabled for that purpose. They are crimes that have to do with contamination and breach of duties as a public official,” said Rambaldi.

In turn, he explained that since 2022 he has been investigating with his team and was able to verify the presence of garbage with photographs and filming. “The municipal employees called me to let me know that the waste was being thrown out with the collection trucks on the property near Laguna Azul,” the councilor said.

In addition, he said that the Municipality tried to cover the “clandestine dump” with dirt dumped by trucks and machines. “They spent weeks dumping tons of trash and the dump is still on,” he added.

At the same time, he affirmed that the most serious thing is that it is in a reserve zone and considered red. “Originally the municipality enabled the place to throw pruning and over time they began to throw rubble and garbage. I asked for the ordinance to find out if it is authorized for that purpose, but they did not give it to me, ”she said.

In the city, waste collection is done with trucks and then it is taken to a transfer plant, in the La Campana neighborhood; they unload and transfer the garbage to flatbed trucks for its final destination in Piedras Blancas, Córdoba capital.

But, apparently what happened – Rambaldi affirmed – is that the punt trucks broke down “and they had no better idea than to start shooting clandestinely in this place”.

The complaint was filed on May 9 in Courts II.

The municipality denies that it throws garbage

The municipality denied the facts reported and explained that until three months ago the private land (which is a hole in an old quarry) was used by the municipality to chip the branches transported by municipal trucks.

“The trucks that they saw were those that carried branches because the private sector lent us the place,” said Mayor Facundo Rufeil.

Then it closed – he added – “and we closed the public part of the road, but people continued to enter to throw garbage,” he argued.

And he clarified that the municipality did not throw or throw garbage on that property. And he denied that the trucks that carry waste to Piedras Blancas have ever broken down. “That is easy to verify because we do it every day,” he asserted.

Regarding the fires that he considers intentional, he argued that a few days ago they went with the Fire Department to put it out and clean it up, as happens every time there are landfill fires.

“People throw their garbage there and in many other places in La Calera. They are located and we close them. We would need inspectors to stand guard at each place and that is impossible,” he said.
