This Wednesday, the new Cipolletti Independent Film Festival, organized by the famous Cipolletti Film Group, opens. We say film festival, but strictly speaking it is the already legendary independent film competition, whose origins date back to 1983.

But saying it’s new doesn’t tell the whole story: this is the 40th edition, which is a nice round number, so it can be said that, at the moment, it’s the most frequently held festival in the country. As you’ll see, legends aren’t weird at all.

The 40th Cipolletti Independent Film Festival will be held from Wednesday to Saturday at the Cultural Center

That said, the 40th edition of this festival, a classic event of this time of the year, will take place from Wednesday to Saturday this week at the Cipolletti Cultural Center and all events are free to attend.

Highlight of this edition: the exhibition “Forty Years of Independent Cinema: Image, Design and Equipment” will be held in the confectionary area of the complex. “We will be displaying materials that we have preserved over the years, as well as materials that are part of the Villanova family archives as well as some photos of the Kelly family from graphics, old programs, various photos, equipment used for filming and filming. Ignacio Dobrée, member of the Cipolletti Film Group, said:

Also in honor of the 40th anniversary of the event, this Wednesday at 8:30 pm two Super 8 films in their original format will be screened in the framework of what they call “Kelly & Vilanova Films”, in the Lorenzo Kelly Room of the Cultural Complex . One of them is “New Landscape Region” by Lorenzo Kelly and Carlos Prokopik, showing different sides of northwest Neuquén; photograph by Alberto Vilanova “Restoring Mapuche Culture,” a roughly 15-minute film, was produced based on research from the University of North Carolina School of Educational Sciences.

a little history

The National Independent Film and Video Competition was founded in 1983 under the auspices of Grusu 8, the city’s organization of independent filmmakers, after sharing lessons on the use of SuperCam 8 two years ago (1981) established.

Patagonia's first filmmaker Carlos Procopiuk has his own film

In addition to Kelly, Grusu 8 at that time also consisted of Alberto Vilanova, Dragutín Klein and Carlos Gazzola.

For the first few years, the competition supported films exclusively, until 1989, when it was decided to include films in a parallel competition. Four years later, in 1993, the film format was phased out because almost no one was presenting work in this format.

Due to different circumstances, the group was reduced in size until only Lorenzo Kelly remained after the unexpected death of Alberto Villanova. In 2003, Cipolletti Film Group took over, including Alberto’s son, independent photographer and filmmaker Juan Martín Vilanova. He was accompanied by Francisco Caparrós, an art graduate from Las Plata. Both sides decided to resume the game. A year later, Ignacio Dobrée, a professor at UNRN and UNC, joined. Later Pablo Gaulthier and Virginia Naffa did it.

Having said that, let’s take a look at the program schedule and everything that can be seen at this Cipoleño independent film event.
