After Carson and Long Beach, the City of Santa Monica (California, United States) is in turn preparing to decide whether or not to integrate it into the organization of the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games. This Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the Municipal Council of the coastal city must indeed examine a report relating to the financial impact of the probable hosting of the beach volleyball tournament.

Sauf twist, Santa Monica will be part of the mapping of the 2028 Olympics.

As has been envisaged since the beginnings of the American candidacy, the neighboring city of Los Angeles should become even more involved in discussions with the organizers of the global event with a view to establishing the matches of the Olympic tournament on its legendary beach. beach volleyball.

Before entering into a formal agreement such as those signed between LA 2028 and the Cities of Carson and Long Beach during the spring of 2024local elected officials will nevertheless have to examine a report ordered from the consulting firm HR&A Advisors regarding the financial impact of hosting on site of a global event, generating an influx of spectators and visibility in the four corners of the planet.

In fact, the said report will be presented to elected officials at the next meeting of the Municipal Council scheduled for this Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

L’36-page study highlights in particular the fact that hosting beach volleyball matches could generate a cost of 15.54 million dollars (14.16 million euros) on local finances, with the City having to provide a surplus of local forces. order, while guaranteeing traffic conditions around the competition site, or even the proper collection of waste. This cost could, however, be partially offset to the tune of 14.09 million dollars (12.83 million euros) via tax revenues and rental payments by the Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic Games. The latter will notably have to cover the rental costs of the beach for 2.5 million dollars (2.28 million euros), but also the costs linked to the temporary privatization of adjacent car parks – up to 800 spaces impacted at the time of the Games – for 2.4 million dollars (2.19 million euros).

In finethe City of Santa Monica would find itself facing a net loss estimated today at 1.45 million dollars (1.32 million euros).

A loss to put into perspective with the postcard image that the organization of Olympic events would send and which would possibly result in a renewed tourist interest in the years to come, even if the Californian locality already benefits from a major attraction.

Moreover, the same study projects the spending of visitors who would be required to go to Santa Monica during the Games. In the event of hosting the aforementioned tournament, said expenses could amount to 112.3 million dollars (102.3 million euros), compared to 95.4 million (86.9 million euros) in the event that the City of Santa Monica decided not to take part in the organization of the Games.

Beyond the financial question, Santa Monica also intends to discuss with the organizers of the Games the possibility of maintaining the opening of the famous pier for walkers, but also the restoration of the beach, the infrastructures planned for Games being planned to be dismantled at the end of the event anyway.

Also, the City and the Organizing Committee should undoubtedly reach a suitable financial agreement for each party, LA 2028 being keen to take advantage of a spectacular setting to orchestrate a sport that made its debut in Santa Monica at the beginning of the 20th century before winning the world and joining the sports program of the Olympic Games from 1996 after having been a demonstration sport during the 1992 Barcelona Games.

As David White, City Manager of Santa Monica, explained:

Santa Monica is an iconic destination known around the world. And as the birthplace of beach volleyball, there is no better place to host the 2028 Summer Olympics competition.

The city team has worked hard to negotiate a deal that works for Santa Monica, and the study session is a critical opportunity for the City Council and the public to provide input on what is best for our community.

If the City of Santa Monica decides this month in favor of participating in the Games, three other agreements should still be ratified with LA 2028, relating in particular to the organizational modalities and operational details.

During the candidacy phase, for 2024 then for 2028, Santa Monica was systematically included in the planning system for hosting the Games, showing if necessary the attachment of the project leaders to this emblematic sector of the American west coast.

In addition to beach volleyball – which remained on site – the legendary beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean had also been considered for a time for triathlon and open water swimming events, before the latter were moved further south on the Long Beach side.

For the Olympic beach volleyball tournament, the bidders had from the start planned the development of a main temporary enclosure with 12,000 seats, knowing that holding the matches could lead to the arrival of 450,000 spectators over the entire the duration of the Games, without taking into account the flow of additional visitors to the city.

In parallel with this sports site intended to host the Olympic tournament, seven other structures were envisaged, namely two warm-up fields and five training fields, the entire system representing a cost of 23.4 million dollars to the charge of the Organizing Committee (2016 value).
