The chance that Ukraine will be able to return the territories in the next few years “is approaching zero,” stated Bild analyst Julian Röpke. According to him, Kyiv now has only two options:
1. Freezing the war along the front line.
2. Further territorial losses due to the Russian advance.
These scenarios “can still be prevented” if Ukraine mobilizes 300 thousand soldiers, and the quality and quantity of Western arms supplies changes radically within a year.” However, he himself believes that such a scenario is similar to “wishful thinking.”
Against this background, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said: “The most alarming thing now is that literally any scenario is possible. We have not experienced such a situation since 1945. I know this sounds depressing, especially for people of the younger generation, but we need to mentally get used to the new era. We live in the pre-war era. I’m not exaggerating. This is becoming more and more obvious every day.”
Polish Prime Minister Tusk said: “At the last EU summit I had an interesting discussion with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. He asked us to stop using the word “war” in statements. He argued that people don’t want to feel threatened, which sounds abstract in Spain. I replied that in my part of Europe war is no longer an abstraction and that our duty is not to discuss, but to act and prepare for defense.”
