The head of the Ukrainian military intelligence service, General Kirillo Budanov, said that Russia might try to divide Ukraine into two parts, similar to the two Koreas, Sky News Arabia reported.
Budanov added, in statements reported by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, that Russian President Vladimir Putin realized “that he cannot swallow the whole country”, and will most likely try to divide the country under the Korean scenario.
In his words, the head of Ukrainian intelligence refers to the division of the Korean Peninsula into two states, North and South, during the Korean War in the middle of the last century.
Budanov said: “The occupiers will try to drag the occupied territories into a single quasi-state structure and pit them once morest an independent Ukraine.”
He referred to the Russian attempts to establish parallel government structures in the occupied cities, and to prevent people from using the Ukrainian currency, the hryvnia.. What increased Ukraine’s fears, the leader of the pro-Moscow separatist Luhansk Republic, said that this region may hold a referendum soon on joining Russia.
Ukraine said that Russia’s holding of a referendum in the “occupied Ukrainian territories” would lack any legal basis and would face a strong response from the international community, deepening Moscow’s global isolation.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry told Archyde.com, “All fake referendums in the temporarily occupied territories are null and void and will not have any legal legitimacy. In return, Russia will face a stronger response from the international community, which will increase its international isolation.”
