According to Zelenskyy, around 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in the seven weeks since the war broke out in Ukraine. Moscow, on the other hand, gives a much higher number: around 4,000 soldiers died in the besieged city of Mariupol alone.
According to Russian information, more than 23,000 soldiers have been killed on the Ukrainian side since the war began more than seven weeks ago. Among them are members of the Ukrainian army, the national guard and foreign mercenaries, said the spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashenkov. The information cannot be independently verified. Ukraine itself reports the losses in its own ranks as being significantly lower.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke of 2,500 to 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in an interview published on Friday. At the same time, Zelenskyj stated that more than 20,000 military personnel were said to have been killed on the Russian side. Moscow, on the other hand, continues to state its own losses at around 1,350.
The Russian ministry spokesman Konashenkov also announced that more than 4,000 Ukrainians had been killed in the heavily contested port city of Mariupol alone. All remaining Ukrainian fighters have meanwhile entrenched themselves in the Azovstal steelworks.
Konashenkov also said that a Ukrainian plane carrying weapons from the West was shot down in the region around the Black Sea metropolis of Odessa. That too might not be verified at first.
