The Ukrainian authorities are trying to negotiate with the Russian Federation in a different way, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the Italian TV company Mediaset. He explained that now in Kyiv they want to first receive security guarantees from Western countries, although previously they had to be agreed upon by everyone, including Russia.
Lavrov recalled that at the talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul, certain outlines of the agreements were outlined: Ukraine’s readiness to be a neutral, non-bloc, non-nuclear country, with the understanding that the country would receive security guarantees.
“Now the Ukrainian side is trying to build the negotiation process in a different way. In particular, they want to first receive security guarantees from the West, although initially these guarantees should have been agreed upon by everyone together, including Russia,” the minister specified.
