Kuwait.. revoked the citizenship of 63 people, including two defendants in the Iraqi “theft of the century” case

Among those whose citizenship was revoked were two people whose names were mentioned in August 2024 in the case of “theft of tax deposits” in Iraq, known as the “theft of the century,” and Iraq announced that they were dual.

The first, second, and fifth decrees stipulated the withdrawal of citizenship from 53 women and men based on paragraph 4 of Article 13 of Emiri Decree No. 15 of 1959 regarding the Kuwaiti Nationality Law and its amending laws, which stipulate that “it is permissible to withdraw citizenship from a Kuwaiti who acquired it by applying the provisions of Articles 3, 4, and 5.” 7 and 8 of the law if the state’s supreme interest or external security so requires. In this case, Kuwaiti nationality may be withdrawn from those who have acquired it through dependency.

As for the third and fourth decrees, they stipulated the withdrawal of citizenship from two men and a woman and from those who had acquired it with them through dependency, based on paragraph 1 of Article 13 of the same decree, which states: “It is permissible to withdraw citizenship from a Kuwaiti who acquired it by applying the provisions of Articles 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8.” of the law if he was granted Kuwaiti citizenship fraudulently or based on false statements.”

Two decisions were also issued by the Council of Ministers to withdraw the citizenship certificate by establishment from 5 men and one woman and from those who had acquired it from the holder of that certificate through dependency, based on Article 21 bis “A” of Emiri Decree No. 15 of 1959, which stipulates “withdrawal of the Kuwaiti citizenship certificate if it is found that it is It was given unjustly based on fraud, false statements, or incorrect certificates, and the withdrawal shall be made by a decision of the Council of Ministers based on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior, and this must withdraw Kuwaiti citizenship from the person who acquired it from the holder of that certificate by way of dependency.
