Agence France-Presse reported that Nawaf served as Kuwait’s defense minister when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. At that time, the war prompted armies from around the world to come to end Iraq’s occupation of Kuwait.
Nawaf was designated as crown prince in 2006 by his half-brother and then head of state, Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah. Sabah died in September 2020, and Nawaf succeeded him as head of state.
Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported that Nawaf was hospitalized in November due to “urgent health problems”, but the report did not elaborate on his condition.
