The Visma leader succeeds Tiesj Benoot on the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne winners list at the end of the 196.4 kilometers which made up this 76th edition!
He won at the end of a three-way breakaway, which managed to break away 80 kilometers from the finish. Accompanied by Tim Wellens and Oier Lazkano, several times on the verge of breaking, Wout Van Aert waited until the end to launch his attack.
“We started the fight more than a hundred kilometers away. It’s good, we needed a hard race. Then I found myself in the final with two good riders, it was the ideal scenario. Plus we had a favorable wind most of the time.
It was a difficult race but I had two good breakaway companions. It was a much smaller group than expected. That’s how I knew it would be possible to control the situation better in the finale.”
“It’s clear that it’s really good for my confidence to have won Kuurne, but these are very different races from the Classics that are coming. So it’s time to continue the work and improve the last percentages in sight monuments.” a expliqué Van Aert.
