A new drug called “Kush” is causing widespread concern in a number of West African countries, especially in Sierra Leone, where it is estimated to kill regarding ten people every week, and thousands are hospitalized, according to the “Kush” website.ScienceAlert“.

The drug, which is mostly used by young people between the ages of 18 and 25, causes serious conditions, such as loss of consciousness, complete separation from reality, and other serious psychological and physical damage, turning its users into “zombies.”

The drug Kush consists of a mixture of cannabis, fentanyl, tramadol, and formaldehyde, according to the same source, who pointed out that there are reports that ground human bones have been added to these ingredients.

The same source explained that local criminal gangs are promoting the materials used to form this drug, pointing out that “some of them have international sources.”

While cannabis is widely grown in Sierra Leone, fentanyl is believed to be manufactured illegally in clandestine laboratories in China, before being shipped to West African countries.

Tramadol has a similar source, as it is manufactured in illegal laboratories in various parts of Asia, according to “Science Alert”, which stated that the presence of formaldehyde in the mixture causes strong hallucinations.

As for human bones, the site states that there is no final answer regarding their use in the drug, or also their source, and the reason behind their inclusion in the “Kush” mixture.

The website quoted people saying that grave robbers save human bones from the bodies of the dead, claiming that its use is due to the high level of sulfur in the bones, which represents a strong drug.

Others point to the presence of drugs in these same bones, especially if they belong to a former user of fentanyl or tramadol.

However, the site considered these two possibilities unlikely, noting that sulfur levels in bones are not high. The presence of any anesthetic substance in the bones is less than the level required to produce a physiological effect.

It has been reported that the drug “Kush” has been detected in both Guinea and Liberia, which share land borders with Sierra Leone, making the drug flow into it, according to Science Alert.

The effects of the drug vary, depending on its user and its content, as cannabis causes a wide range of effects, which include euphoria, relaxation, and an altered state of consciousness.

Fentanyl, an extremely powerful opioid, causes euphoria, confusion, and drowsiness, among a wide range of other side effects.

Likewise, Tramadol, which is also an opioid, causes its users to feel drowsy and disconnected from reality and things happening around them.
