After Apple’s development of its own 5G modem failed, rumors surfaced that the company was creating its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips. Just a few weeks later, however, the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple would paused development of own Wi-Fi chip.
According to him, despite the concern of investors regarding the impact that this possible new chip might have on the market, its development has been suspended for the time being. The analyst explained that the company was developing a chip that was just Wi-Fi, not a combo, as previously pointed out by the journalist. Mark Gurmanyes Bloomberg.
This is because developing the two technologies together would be more challenging, as the Bluetooth currently used requires more effort. How Apple Uses a SoCSystem on a chipor system on a chip.”>1it would be more difficult to add a chip to replace those in the Broadcom.
On this issue, however, Gurman retorted Kuo’s analysis, stating that Apple is continuing to develop its own chip with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, ruling out the possibility of it being just Wi-Fi.
Kuo added that the company’s efforts are focused on developing the processors for the next iPhones and Macs in a process of 3 nanometers. Therefore, the project of the 5G modem itself — which has considerable relevance — had already been put in the background, so that the Wi-Fi chip, which has even less visibility and strategic value, was left even more aside.
Also, as the analyst said, it would be risky for Apple to develop a Wi-Fi chip at a time of changing industry standards towards more advanced technologies. In this way, he assessed that, at least in the near future, Broadcom will continue to supply these components for iPhones and will be the biggest winner with the launch of the next models.
